HAWKWIND AT FRIARS
Hawkwind came on to the usual reception, reserved indiscriminately for any band who treads the legendary friars stage. They immediately launched into Reefer Madness, also the opener on their latest album, and proceeded to numb everyone’s branes with the volume. Not unusual for a heavy metal band ,but the level of distortion was just too high to allow anyone to appreciate the subtleties creeping into the new Hawkwind sound. So it goes – a ragbag selection of numbers, some as yet unrecorded, ranging from a mutant Brainstorm to a long drawn out Steppenwolf. All bummer versions, and it looked like an all time low for the band until they did Uncle Sam‘s on Mars; a powerful number.
It’s perhaps the closest theyv’e got with their new material to the old style, with all the old dynamics shining through. Next came something I’ve never heard them do live before; Urban Guerilla ~ never released on album, a hastily withdrawn single (when the IRA heavies started leaving nasty packages lying about.) The encore was a few bars of Magnu, degenerating into a rocking work out around Back on the Streets…and that was it, mates.
